TRC20 vs ERC20: Which USDT Network Should You Use in Trust Wallet?

USDT exists on multiple blockchain networks and Trust Wallet supports all of them — including TRC20 (TRON), ERC20 (Ethereum), and BEP20 (BNB Smart Chain). Understanding the differences is crucial before sending or receiving funds.

TRC20 — USDT on the TRON Network

TRC20 USDT runs on the TRON blockchain. It is widely known for its extremely low transaction fees — often less than $1 — and fast confirmation times of 1 to 5 minutes. TRC20 addresses start with the letter T. This makes TRC20 the preferred choice for high-frequency transfers, P2P payments, and moving large amounts of USDT with minimal cost.

ERC20 — USDT on Ethereum

ERC20 USDT runs on the Ethereum blockchain. Ethereum has historically had higher gas fees compared to TRON, especially during periods of network congestion. ERC20 addresses start with 0x. Despite higher fees, ERC20 USDT remains widely supported across DeFi protocols, lending platforms, and many centralized exchanges.

BEP20 — USDT on BNB Smart Chain

BEP20 is the USDT standard on Binance's BNB Smart Chain. It offers low fees and fast transactions, similar to TRC20. BEP20 addresses also start with 0x, which means they look identical to ERC20 addresses — so always verify the network label before sending.

Which Should You Choose in Trust Wallet?

If your priority is low cost and speed, TRC20 is typically the best option for everyday USDT transfers. If you need to interact with Ethereum-based DeFi platforms or certain exchanges, ERC20 is required. Always confirm with the receiving platform or person which network they support before sending.

Sending the wrong network version — for example, sending TRC20 USDT to an address that only accepts ERC20 — can result in funds being permanently inaccessible.
